The South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team achieved a historic feat on Monday.
As AP Top 25 voters ranked them as the No. 1 team in the country again, they did so and made history. They became the most-recent team to go wire-to-wire as the AP No. 1 team in the country. This is also the second consecutive season that they’ve done this!
“POLL ALERT: South Carolina caps wire-to-wire run at No. 1 in women’s AP Top 25 for second straight year,” the AP Top 25 account tweeted.

The Gamecocks completed an undefeated regular season and won the SEC Tournament to move to 32-0. South Carolina hopes to cut down the nets in Dallas at the Women’s Final Four. Last year, South Carolina was the top overall seed at 29-2 going into the tournament. They won it all in Minnesota and hope to claim their second consecutive women’s NCAA title.
Led by Aliyah Boston, the Gamecocks have been stupendous this season. They are on a quest to go 38-0 this season and, so far, they have passed every test. They will have to go through the gauntlet if they want to do it, but that hasn’t stopped them before, and may not again.
The Gamecocks, Louisiana Tech, and UConn are the only three programs to go wire-to-wire for two straight seasons. The Huskies, of course, hold the all-time record for consecutive weeks as the No. 1 team in the country at 51. South Carolina is currently at 38.
