The Temple Owls settled on their new men’s head basketball coach. His message to them: Thanks, but no thanks.

CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein reported Wednesday that Temple offered the position to Missouri associate head coach Charlton Young. However, less than an hour later, Rothstein reported that Young had “withdrawn his name from consideration for the head coaching vacancy at Temple due to the uncertainty with the leadership of the school.”

As for the “uncertainty,” Rothstein cited Tuesday’s resignation of Temple University President Jason Wingard after less than two years in the post. Wingard’s resignation was unexpected, although the university has been beset by problems. A strike of graduate student workers, declining enrollment the past two years, and the recent shooting death of a Temple police officer had put Wingard under pressure.

Young has almost 30 years of NCAA coaching experience. His only stint as a head coach came from 2009 to 2013 at his alma mater, Georgia Southern, where he posted a 43-84 record. Before going to Missouri last season, he served as an assistant at Georgia Tech, Chattanooga, Auburn, Northeastern, and Jacksonville.

The news that Young appeared ready to take the Temple job, only to decline it, caught Twitter off guard. One user noted, “His Wiki page says he’s the coach at Temple. Guess that needs to be changed now.”

Temple is seeking to replace Aaron McKie, who stepped down as coach in mid-March after four seasons. He will now serve as a special advisor for Temple athletics. The Owls finished 16-16 this year.
