Texas fired men’s basketball coach Chris Beard on Thursday.

The firing comes less than a month after the disgraced coach was arrested and charged with a third-degree felony. The charge was for assault on a family member.

The Austin Statesman first reported the news. They tweeted, “Texas fires men’s basketball coach Chris Beard, Rodney Terry to continue in his place.”

According to the report from the Austin Statesman, the Longhorns terminated Beard for cause. Additionally, according to the report, “Beard was offered the chance to resign, according to documents obtained by the Austin American-Statesman under the Freedom of Information Act, but he chose not to.”

In the early hours on December 12, Austin police responded to a call and arrested Beard. He was booked for the third-degree felony charge that morning. That day, more details would emerge about the incident. They were both disturbing and shocking in nature. Texas later suspended Beard and made Rodney Terry the interim head coach.

His fiancée would apologize later for the allegations. Texas announced they would review the statement on Christmas Eve and, perhaps rightly. have decided to part ways with him anyway.

Texas law is extremely tough on family violence. Even if it’s a first-time offense, a conviction for a third-degree felony could carry a prison sentence of up to 2-10 years.
