The Texas men’s basketball program made huge news on Monday afternoon as the team has reportedly decided on its next head coach.

CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein reported that interim head coach Rodney Terry is finalizing a deal to be the next head coach at Texas. Rothstein reports that a press conference announcing Terry’s ascension to permanent head coach is expected this week.

The news comes after the Longhorns were eliminated by the Miami Hurricanes in the Elite Eight of the 2023 NCAA Tournament. While Texas was unable to punch its ticket to the Final Four, Terry accomplished something that hasn’t been done in over 30 years. He led a team to the Elite Eight after not starting the season as the program’s head coach.

Terry did not start the season coaching Texas. That was Chris Beard.

But in January, Beard — now the head men’s basketball coach at Ole Miss — was fired after being arrested for third-degree felony domestic violence following an incident with his fiancée. Terry assumed the interim head coaching role, one that was placed upon him when the University originally suspended Beard pending an investigation.

Terry went 22-8 after he took over for Beard and will now be rewarded for his success. This will be Terry’s third stop as a head coach, as he previously led both the Fresno State (2011-18) and UTEP programs (2018-21) before landing in Austin.

The sports world reacted to the major Texas coaching news on social media.
