Earlier this week, the Michigan State Spartans community was struck with tragedy after three students were killed and five were critically injured in a mass shooting on campus. Following the tragedy, Michigan State men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo shared a heartfelt message and honored the victims before Saturday’s game, but now he thinks it’s time to move on.
After Saturday’s game, Tom Izzo said that he thinks it’s time for the community to return to normalcy.
“I think with every tragedy and I’ve, unfortunately, been through too many things here in the last five, six years,” Izzo said. “In fact, come back to 9/11, I think getting back to normalcy the best you can shouldn’t be taken as an insult for the people. I felt it hard to give a Knute Rockne speech because I was thinking what would I do as a parent. Would I feel good? So that was difficult. I’m a weirdo. I believe we should have gone back to work after COVID. I believe we should get back to school Monday. I realized there’s going to be problems and people are going to have to deal with things but I don’t know how you learn to deal with things if you never go through them. It’s very important that normalcy regains itself and yet don’t forget what happened. That would be an insult the victims. Don’t forget it, try to do better. But unfortunately, the sad part of life is it does move on.”
While Izzo may think this is the best approach, it’s clear that many in the Michigan State community are still grieving.
