Hugh Freeze Auburn Tigers football coach Hugh Freeze is introduced at the Woltosz Football Performance Center in Auburn, Ala., on Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2022

Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze has been busy since arriving on the Plains. Auburn reportedly has landed 21 recruits in the transfer portal, including one Deion Sanders signed at Jackson State.

The Tigers added former Jackson State wide receiver Shane Hooks from the portal. Hooks could be a tremendous asset in this Auburn offense this upcoming season.

He caught 64 passes for nearly 800 yards and ten touchdowns for Sanders’ Jackson State Tigers last year. This is the fourth wideout that Auburn has added this year and sits just behind Sanders and Colorado in the number of recruits brought in through the transfer portal.

Unlike Sanders, Freeze didn’t rehaul his whole roster, and it is seemly working for him. Now, the Tigers may have a fighting chance to make a bowl game and even be competitive in the SEC West.

Freeze seems to be excited about his new roster. “I know there’s a lot of excitement right now with what we’ve done recruiting, and I’m thrilled about that,” he said via FlyWarEagle.com. “I’m excited, but it’s too early to tell how much have we closed the gap on the ones we have to close the gap on. How much? I don’t think we’ll know until we play some games. The one thing I’m confident about is we’ve improved our roster.”

We all will find out soon if Freeze’s gambles in the portal pay off this upcoming season.
