Brian Kelly LSU Tigers head coach Brian Kelly watches on from the sideline as Auburn Tigers take on LSU Tigers at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala., on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022. LSU Tigers defeated Auburn Tigers 21-17.

Few coaching changes were as seismic as Brian Kelly’s move from Notre Dame to LSU this offseason. However, so far in 2022, much like Kelly’s dancing, has been disappointing.

Kelly said when he arrived in Baton Rouge that he planned to compete for national titles. But that’s not going to happen this year. The Tigers lost their season opener against Florida State before getting back on track and entering Saturday’s game against the Tennessee Volunteers ranked No. 25 in the nation. They won’t be in Monday’s polls however after the Vols dominated Kelly’s team 40-13 in Tiger Stadium.

It’s not the kind of outcome that LSU fans have been accustomed to in recent years. And they certainly don’t want to see programs like Tennessee leapfrog them in the SEC. However, it’s going to take time for Kelly to rebuild the Tigers from the drop-off they’ve been dealing with since winning the national title in 2019.

Kelly isn’t exactly the most likable coach out there, to begin with, but if he can’t back it up with wins, he’s going to have a pretty hard time winning back the hearts and minds of LSU fans, no matter how much he tries to sound like them.

The Tigers head to Gainesville for their rivalry game against the Florida Gators next week. If they don’t win, the heat will be on Kelly even more.
