Coastal Carolina quarterback Bryce Carpenter was arrested Sunday for allegedly throwing a woman onto concrete.

According to TMZ Sports, police said that Carpenter was arrested at 1:45 AM on Sunday morning. Court records reveal that Carpenter has been charged with one count of third-degree assault and battery after “grabbing her, picking her up and throwing her down onto a concrete sidewalk.” The woman reportedly suffered scratches on her back and arms and a hematoma on the back of her head.

The 23-year-old is a 5th-year senior with the team and was expected to start for the Chanticleers against East Carolina in the Birmingham Bowl.

This is the second time this week that someone in college athletics has been accused of attacking a woman. Texas head coach basketball coach Chris Beard was arrested Monday for strangling his fiance.

Violence against women has long been an issue in sports but we’ve gotten used to seeing it more at the NFL level. However, there are a significant number of cases of women being abused on college campuses by athletes. One hopes it doesn’t take someone dying before the schools and NCAA will address this type of violence, especially when it happens involving football players.
