Earlier this week, NFL Hall of Famer and current Jackson State head coach Deion Sanders confirmed previous reports that the Colorado Buffaloes wanted to make him their next head football coach. It would certainly be a bold move on its face, but the amount of money the program is prepared to offer Sanders is even bolder.

According to a report from Justin Adams of CBS News, the Colorado Buffaloes are prepared to offer Deion Sanders more than $5 million per year to become their next head coach – and that number could grow significantly if he reached certain incentives as the team’s head coach.

Here is what Adams wrote on the situation for CBS News:

Three sources familiar with the negotiations say CU is also offering Sanders a bevy of incentives that if reached, could significantly elevate his annual salary. All three sources spoke on the condition of anonymity as they were not authorized by CU to release details of the tentative offer.

According to the CBS News Colorado sources, if Sanders achieved nearly a dozen contractual benchmarks, his annual pay would increase by roughly 40%.

Of course, Sanders is by no means guaranteed to agree to this deal – he’s made that point quite clear. He also has some other suitors who may be able to make similar offers. But still, this is certainly an eye-popping offer.
