Devastatingly, a Florida police officer has died after suffering complications from a broken leg he suffered while working a college football game. The state trooper was working security for a Florida Atlantic University football game when a player on the sideline unintentionally ran into him.
State trooper Craig Gaines initially brushed off the hit, but a medical evaluation would go on to reveal that he’d broken his leg. Tragically, things deteriorated rapidly, and he passed away from complications stemming from his leg.
The Florida Atlantic athletic department released a statement following the news.
“Florida Atlantic University Athletics is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Craig Gaines. We extend our condolences to the Gaines family, Florida A&M University, FHP, and to all those that knew and loved him.”
Head coach Willie Simmons also released something after the devastating news.
“For 6 years you went everywhere I went on away trips (even some places we shouldn’t have gone)! LOL You escorted me on and off the field for 58 staight games! The laughs shared between me, you, Troy, Jimmy and Detrick will never be forgotten!
“I wasn’t prepared to get the news Friday of your passing! Rest in Heaven brother! We love you Craig!!!”
Fans reacted to the tragedy on social media.
Our condolences Coach to you and the grieving families. God Bless,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Solid dude man RIP Trooper Gaines,” someone else added.
“Stand up guy, RIP Mr Gaines,” another fan added.
Craig Gaines will be in our thoughts and prayers here at The Comeback.
