Auburn Tigers head coach Hugh Freeze was struck with a medical scare recently as the team announced this week that the coach had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
While cancer is always scary in all of its forms, the school said in a statement that cancer was “detected early” and that it is “very treatable and curable.”
The school also announced that Freeze will continue to coach Auburn while he gets treatment for the cancer.
“Recently, Coach Freeze was diagnosed with an early form of prostate cancer,” the school said in a statement. “Thankfully, it was detected early and his doctors have advised that it is very treatable and curable. He will continue his normal coaching duties and responsibilities, and with forthcoming proper treatment, is expected to make a full recovery.
“Coach Freeze is incredibly appreciative of our medical professionals and has asked that we use his experience as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing and scheduling annual health screenings.”
Freeze is entering his third season as the head coach of the Auburn Tigers. During his first two seasons with the team, the Tigers have posted an 11-14 total record with a 5-11 record in conference games. However, there is room for optimism going forward.
The team made several key additions through the transfer portal this offseason, adding former five-star quarterback Jackson Arnold out of Oklahoma, wide receivers Eric Singleton Jr. and Horatio Fields out of Georgia Tech and Wake Forest respectively, offensive tackle Xavier Chaplin out of Georgia Tech, and a few others.
The team is set to begin spring practice on March 25. Freeze will continue to lead the way despite his medical scare.
