Golf legend Jack Nicklaus assisted Rory McIlroy in winning his first Masters green jacket by advising him to keep his game plan simple for the tournament. “Don’t do dumb things,” Nicklaus advised the younger McIlroy.
However, Nicklaus wishes his Ohio State Buckeyes had someone tell give them the same advice before their fourth consecutive loss to the Michigan Wolverines.
“What in the world was your game plan at Michigan?” Nicklaus wondered after talking about McIlroy and the Masters, according to the Columbus Dispatch. “I don’t know who called the plays at Michigan … but (OSU) took the ball right down the field and scored, then shut down.”
Nicklaus continued with how, for the Buckeyes’ playoff run, they got their act together.
“The playoff games, they didn’t do any of that,” he said. “Ohio State football last year was aggressive football. They took chances and put the ball down the field, and you expected that (against Michigan), not shutting the thing down. And Michigan had a great defense. Michigan just outcoached the game, I guess you could say.”
One fan reacted to Nicklaus’s sentiment on social media.
“Because Jack… coaches get CUTE! And overthink it! They wanted to ‘establish the run,’ when they had the GREATEST Wide Receiver room in the country,
the fan wrote on Twitter.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Buckeyes approach “The Game” next season.
