The Denver Broncos have very little remaining to play for this season after the team was eliminated from playoff contention earlier this month and fired head coach Nathaniel Hackett. But even despite that, Broncos interim head coach Jerry Rosburg made the decision to have a full-contact, padded practice this week. And that move has turned out to be quite controversial with the players.

As NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports, multiple Broncos players were unhappy with the decision to go full-contact late in the season.

“Rosburg explained to reporters on Thursday that he opted for a padded practice because, under the labor deal, the team had one more padded practice available this year. But the availability of a padded practice doesn’t mean the padded practice has to be used,” Florio wrote on Pro Football Talk. “We’ve caught wind that some players — players who would prefer to emerge from final days of a lost season as healthy as possible — weren’t happy about it.

It’s a perplexing move when the best and most logical coaching decision would be to prepare the team for next season. Making sure players are as healthy as possible would seemingly be the best option. But ultimately, it’s Rosburg’s decision.
