Jim Harbaugh Blake Corum Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh walks off the field after the Wolverines lost, 34-11, to Georgia at the Orange Bowl at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, on Friday, Dec. 31, 2021.

Jim Harbaugh and Blake Corum are in the news on Monday. The star Michigan running back revealed that before his return to the Wolverines, head coach Jim Harbaugh advised him to turn pro.

“I had to go with my gut. Coach Harbaugh was telling me to go, my agent telling me hey, I think you should come out. You had one hell of a season,” Corum said via On3. But in the end, a decision to return to school was for graduation. Walking to receive a degree – becoming the first in his family to do so – was a big reason he returned to Ann Arbor.

Corum aggravated his knee and missed the end of the Michigan football season. So both sides were correct in their reasons, and there is no animosity. Harbaugh probably implored Corum to play professionally because of his situation. He knows the risks as much as anyone. But Corum’s passion for school and for the university can’t be disliked or denigrated. It’s almost refreshing, even.

The college football world had plenty to say about Corum’s decision and Harbaugh’s plea to his star running back.

The Heisman Trust snubbed Blake Corum last season at Michigan after a stellar year, but perhaps this year, he and Jim Harbaugh can achieve the goals they have set out to accomplish.
