Ever since the Michigan Wolverines abruptly fired head coach Sherrone Moore last week, citing an inappropriate relationship with a staffer, there has been a lot of speculation that Michigan could target Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer to replace him. However, it does not sound like DeBoer is interested.
Amid rumors and speculation about the Michigan head coaching vacancy, DeBoer issued a statement on Sunday, reaffirming his commitment to Alabama.
“My family and I are very happy in Tuscaloosa and remain extremely grateful for the support of President Mohler, Greg Byrne, the board and so many others,” DeBoer wrote in a statement on social media on Sunday. “We have an incredible opportunity in front of us, so my sole focus is on Alabama football and our preparations to play Oklahoma in the College Football Playoff.”
DeBoer made it clear that he has “no interest” in talking to another program about a job and is “fully committed” to Alabama going forward.
“I have not spoken and have no interest in speaking with anyone else about any other job,” DeBoer continued in his statement. “I am fully committed to this program and lookforward to continuing as the head football coach at the University of Alabama.”
DeBoer is in his second season at Alabama after he was hired to replace the legendary Nick Saban following his sudden retirement.
DeBoer finished his first season at Alabama with a 9-4 record, missing the College Football Playoff. However, despite an early-season loss to the Florida State Seminoles, an upset loss to the Oklahoma Sooners, and a blowout loss to Georgia in the SEC title game, DeBoer and Alabama clinched a spot in the College Football Playoff.
Michigan, meanwhile, is continuing a search for a new full-time head coach after firing Moore. While it’s not clear who Michigan will ultimately hire, it appears that it will not be DeBoer.
