With star quarterback C.J. Stroud leaving the team and set to become a likely top-10 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, the Ohio State Buckeyes need a new quarterback. And after serving as the team’s backup for two years, Kyle McCord is ready to compete for the starting spot.
Even though he’s got a lot more to compete for in practice these days as he battles with fellow quarterback Devin Brown for the team’s starting spot, he’s not changing his approach.
“The first day that I got here as a Buckeye, I put my head down and got to work. And now it’s just the same with a little bit more of an opportunity in front of me,” McCord told Ohio State beat writer Dan Hope of Eleven Warriors. “But you know, it’s still working hard, doing the right things on and off the field. So nothing too crazy.
“You go on social media, you would think your life changed, but honestly, I mean, my mindset’s just been the same. Just trying to be the best version of myself, trying to push myself to become the best player I possibly can be. Even when C.J. was here, that was my mindset, and now that he’s gone, that’s still my mindset.”
Whoever wins the competition will be set up for success as the Buckeyes boast arguably the top receiving corps in the country led by Marvin Harrison Jr., who just happens to be McCord’s former high school teammate. If he wins the job, the two will have a lot of familiarity with each other.
