After just one season with Kyle McCord as the team’s starting quarterback, it looks like the Ohio State Buckeyes and head coach Ryan Day will be going in a different direction next season.
According to a report from Eleven Warriors, Kyle McCord has entered the NCAA transfer portal and intends to leave the program. This means that Ohio State will have a new starting quarterback next season, whether it’s a quarterback currently on the roster – Devin Brown, Lincoln Keinholz, or Air Noland – or a new quarterback the Buckeyes choose to add through the transfer portal.
During his press conference on Sunday, Ryan Day did not rule out the possibility of Ohio State adding a transfer quarterback.
“I mean, right now we’re not actively out there searching for anything other than we’ll see kind of what the next month brings in all positions. So I’m not gonna sit here and get into specifics on each of those positions,” Day said. “We like the guys that we have at a bunch of positions, but we’re going to make sure that whether it’s numbers or depth, that we have the right guys in the right spots.”
It’s massive news, and the college football world had plenty to say about it on social media.
Kyle McCord is in the transfer portal. Huge move to kick off the off-season for Ohio State.

I’ll miss seeing Ryan Day’s super exaggerated sigh and eye roll every time Kyle McCord missed a throw.

Fully expect Kyle McCord to transfer to LSU and set dozens of NCAA records in route to winning a NC and going 1st in the 2025 NFL draft….
Then all his hater OSU Fans spending years complaining about how Day screwed up letting him leave OSU.

Was Ohio State sure Kyle McCord was its best chance to win in 2024?
I didn’t think that answer was yes, which opens up the possibility of losing McCord, because a starter in flux reasonably might not want to stay.
But open competition and/or adding a portal QB is right for OSU.— Doug Lesmerises (@DougLesmerises) December 4, 2023
Did not expect to wake up and see Kyle McCord in the portal.
Glad Ryan Day is not messing around.

Kyle McCord’s last pass attempt against Michigan was a game-sealing interception. So, in that one very specific way, he was exactly like CJ Stroud.

Kyle McCord will leave Ohio State with the best winning % as a starting QB for the Buckeyes in the last 50 years (min 12 starts)
12-1, 92.3%

We’ll have to see who Ohio State tabs as their starting quarterback next season.
