Lane Kiffin became the talk of the college football world this week when he decided to leave the Ole Miss Rebels to become the next head coach of the LSU Tigers, even though Ole Miss is on the verge of a playoff run. However, as Kiffin leaves Ole Miss before the playoff run, he has seemingly changed his mind on one crucial point.
When Kiffin initially left Ole Miss, he brought offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. with him to become his offensive coordinator in Baton Rouge. Like Kiffin, Weis was leaving the Rebels immediately to begin his work with the LSU Tigers.
Weis’s immediate departure from Ole Miss was a demand from Kiffin, according to a report from Chris Low On3. Low reported that Kiffin had “lined up most of his offensive staff to join him at LSU” and “told them if they’re not on the plane to Baton Rouge today, they won’t have a spot on staff.”
It seems that Kiffin has changed his mind on that point.
While Weis while still be leaving Ole Miss and going to LSU following the season, Kiffin has changed his mind and allowed Weis to return to Ole Miss for the team’s run through the College Football Playoff.
“With the playoff committee releasing updated rankings tonight, I wanted it to be known that after conversations with LSU, we are allowing Charlie to return to Ole Miss to coach the team during the playoffs,” Kiffin said in a statement via On3.
“I’ve already made the committee aware of this and I’m hopeful this decision will allow Ole Miss to receive the highest ranking possible because these great players are very deserving of that. I’m excited that Charlie will be back to help coach the greatest team in the history of Ole Miss.”
This decision comes after some college football analysts brought up the possibility that Ole Miss could be left out of the College Football Playoff as a result of the depleted coaching staff.
When the penultimate playoff rankings were released on Tuesday, Ole Miss was ranked No. 6, indicating that they are safely within the playoff field a week before the final rankings are released.
We’ll have to see how Ole Miss performs in the College Football Playoff without Kiffin.
