The personalities around college football are just as integral to the fabric of the game as the on-field product. Often when people hear that what comes to mind are eccentric and legendary coaches such as Lane Kiffin and Nick Saban, respectively.
However, analysts are also capable of becoming a part of the fabric of the game. That’s exactly what happened with one former coach. Lee Corso served on College Gameday seemingly forever, stunning crowds with his upset picks via headgear.
Now, that era is coming to an end, per one prominent insider.
“After 38 incredible years, Lee Corso is retiring. For multiple generations, Coach has been the face of our Saturday mornings and the sport we love. Our friend, our coach, our heart … LC, you will forever be a College GameDay legend!” College Gameday tweeted from its official Twitter account.
Fans reacted to the news on social media.
“An irreplaceable voice of the game, shaped college football culture for decades, gratitude doesn’t even cover it, thank you for the memories, legend forever,” one person wrote on Twitter.
“Please retire the headgear tradition and don’t let McAfee do it,” someone else added.
“One of the voices that made me fall in love with college football growing up. Hearing him always brings back nostalgia. Lee Corso is a legend,” someone else added.
It’ll be interesting to see if Corso’s head tradition gets replaced or if it retires with him.
