On Thursday afternoon, former Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback Tyler Buchner made a somewhat shocking announcement, revealing that he was leaving the program to transfer to the Alabama Crimson Tide, where he will compete for the team’s open starting quarterback position. And it sounds like his former coach wishes him the best.

Shortly after Buchner announced his commitment to Alabama, Marcus Freeman appeared on NFL Network where he reacted to his former quarterback’s decision.

“Oh, we love Tyler,” Marcus Freeman said. “Wish him the best of luck. When he made his decision going to the portal, I told him, ‘I’m always a fan of yours.’ And I look forward to see the success he has at his next program.”

Based on Freeman’s comments Buchner’s statement after leaving the team, it’s clear that there are no hard feelings between the two.

“My time at Notre Dame Allowed me to grow and develop as a football player while building lifelong friendships that were forged under fire,” Buchner said on social media in his announcement. “I love my teammates and I will take those relationships with me for he rest of my life – they truly made my time at Notre Dame special. I also want to thank coach [Marcus] Freeman, the coaching staff, support staff and the entire Irish family for all they did to help me mature both on and off the football field.”

It’s safe to say this was a mutual parting of ways.
