Trick Play

Typically in football of all levels, the wide receivers catch the footballs, not throw them. But during Friday night’s game between the Memphis Tigers and the Houston Cougars, Memphis tried something a little different to some absolutely amazing results.

On the first play of the fourth quarter while up 20-7 over the Cougars, the Tigers called a trick play. Memphis quarterback Seth Henigan threw a backward pass to wide receiver Gabriel Rogers. After catching the ball, Rogers quickly dropped back to pass himself for a double pass, but before he could get the pass off he was swarmed by the Houston defense and had to scramble. Rogers made a few defenders miss, then launched a pass downfield off his back foot.

As it turned out, the pass was absolutely perfect. Rogers threw a beautiful deep pass to Memphis running back Asa Martin for a glorious touchdown.

The throw would have been impressive for any college quarterback, but the fact that Rogers is a wide receiver just made it all the more amazing. And the college football world had plenty to say about it on Twitter.

Unfortunately for Memphis, that was the highlight of a miserable quarter for the Tigers as Houston scored 26 points in the fourth quarter to beat Memphis 33-32 in a wild comeback victory.
