The Miami Hurricanes disappointed in the 2022 college football season. After they hired Mario Cristobal away from Oregon, many believed the Hurricanes were on the cusp of a return to greatness. Instead, the Hurricanes played with little intensity and stumbled into a 5-7 record.

As a result, a consequence was felt on Friday. Cristobal dumped offensive coordinator Josh Gattis, the 2021 Broyles Award winner, after just one season.

Bruce Feldman of The Athletic reported the news on Friday morning. “Miami OC Josh Gattis has been fired by Mario Cristobal after one season,” Feldman tweeted.

Gattis and the offense no doubt disappointed in 2022. But this is a recent trend of Mario Cristobal’s offenses. While he was at Oregon, he had Justin Herbert. But Herbert’s play in college vastly differs from his gun-slinging in the NFL. Many also believe Cristobal runs and has the ideals of an antiquated offense and not one up to modern speed.

The firing was criticized on Twitter as many around the CFB world reacted.

Ben Breiner speculated, “The late January offensive coordinator firing either feels like a lot of instability within a program, or something that has been coming for a minute, and no one got around to really breaking it.”

ESPN reporter Andrea Adelson tweeted, “No surprise Josh Gattis is out at Miami. Canes offense took a step back last year with a proven QB. Started hearing several months back there would be change, was just a matter of time.”

SB Nation’s State of the U opined for former Cristobal assistant Marcus Arroyo to be next in line.

To which one Oregon responded, “I guess they really DID ban all the history books in Florida.”
