The Michigan Wolverines are the face of the Big Ten in this day and age, and for good reason. Michigan is an elite academic institution and is just as dominant when it comes to athletics. Michigan’s men’s and women’s basketball programs are both currently ranked in the AP poll’s top ten, and the football program won a national championship in 2024 and is proving to be the only program in the conference that has what it takes to beat the Ohio State Buckeyes year in and year out.

However, the landscape of college football is in a major transition period, thanks to the introduction of NIL, the current iteration of the transfer portal, and massive conference realignment.

The Big Ten is now looking to bring in outside money from private equity, and Michigan reportedly wants no part of the deal as things stand. In fact, the school is threatening to leave the conference as a whole as soon as possible if the Big Ten decides to move forward with the deal, according to one prominent insider around the sport.

Fans reacted to the possibility of Michigan leaving the Big Ten on social media.

“It’s almost as if he realizes the B1G needs Michigan more than Michigan needs the B1G,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

“Won’t happen, but as an ND fan the Big Ten turmoil over this private investment issue and the Michigan ‘threat’ is music to my ears. Keep it coming,” someone else added.

“Michigan left the BIG 10 once. Then they came crawling back asking to rejoin. Don’t see it happening again,” another person wrote.

It’ll be interesting to see how things shake out from here.
