The Michigan Wolverines had one of the most controversial national championships of all time. Although the Wolverines had a dominant 15-0 campaign, it was stained by accusations that they knew opponents’ plays ahead of time due to an illegal scouting operation devised by operative Connor Stallions.

Now, after concluding its investigation into the matter, the NCAA is handing down its judgment on the football program, according to one college football insider.

“Sources: Among Michigan’s punishments in the NCAA COI ruling, per me and (Dan Wetzel): *Michigan receives a significant fine, expected to be more than $20 million, from loss of postseason football revenue for the next two seasons. *Michigan coach Sherrone Moore is given an additional game suspension, which is expected take place in 2026. The school already proposed a self-imposed a two-game ban for this upcoming season, which is slated for Week 3 and 4,” reported ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Friday.

Fans reacted to the news on social media.

“Sure feels light for 11 violations including 6 level ones Not to mention haphazard. Why is the 3 game suspension over multiple years? Anything to make sure Sherrone is in Norman? Record Postseason fines implies serious wrongdoing yet no postseason ban? It’s inconsistent,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

“Louisville gained no competitive advantage from its violations and had its national title stripped. Michigan gained a competitive advantage from its violations and…..got fined?” one person wrote.

“I’m old enough to remember when the NCAA almost gave Alabama the death penalty because players were selling textbooks,” another fan added.

It’ll be interesting to see how this affects the Wolverines in the long-term.
