Urban Meyer Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer Syndication The Columbus Dispatch

Urban Meyer, new head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers?

This week’s hottest NCAA football rumor gained more steam Saturday after CBS Sports reported that Nebraska officials had contacted Meyer about the coaching vacancy left by Scott Frost’s termination.

The report prominently noted that Nebraska Athletic Director Trev Alberts said that people he contacts about the opening “may not necessarily be candidates for the position.” In other words, he might just be picking Meyer’s brain about potential candidates.

Yet almost from the moment Frost departed, rumors have linked Meyer to Nebraska. A report earlier this week even suggested he might be on the short list of candidates for the open role. This latest news must send a chill down the spine of many Nebraska fans. In case you missed it, during Saturday’s Fox Big Noon Kickoff before Nebraska’s home game against the Oklahoma Sooners, a huge crowd of Huskers fans serenaded Meyer, a Fox Sports analyst sitting on the set, with chants of “We want Urban!”

Meyer has certainly tasted glory in the college football ranks, winning three national championships in stints at Florida and Ohio State. His latest head coaching role, however, with the Jacksonville Jaguars, turned into a debacle, marked by questionable off-field behavior, the team’s poor performance, and reports he had lost the trust of his players. He was fired last December.

While some Nebraska fans are leery about Meyer, others are on board with the possibility of him coming to Lincoln.

For now, former assistant head coach Mickey Joseph is serving as the interim head coach for the Huskers. Unfortunately, things did not go any better in his first game at the helm, as Oklahoma crushed Nebraska 49-14 to drop the Huskers to 1-3
