Oklahoma punter Michael Turk and kicker Zach Schmit are often involved in the same scoring plays, with Turk as the Sooners’ usual holder. But in the second quarter Saturday against Iowa State, they put a spin on that. With the Sooners facing fourth and goal from the Cyclones’ two-yard line and the score tied at three, they set up for a 19-yard field goal. But Schmit turned his run-up to the kick into a full forward run, Turk tossed him the ball, and Schmit ran 19 yards for the touchdown, beating one defender along the way:

That’s an impressive play by Oklahoma. The kicking-like approach from Schmit (seen at left above with Turk in a Sept. 10 game) meant no one picked up on the fake quickly, and the Sooners did a great job of blocking for Schmit afterwards, leaving only one defender (defensive back Beau Fryler, #17) with a real shot at a tackle. But Fryler can’t quite get there (and might have been too deep to stop Schmit from reaching the end zone regardless), making this look easy for the Sooners and giving them a 10-3 lead. This was recorded as a two-yard TD pass from Turk to Schmit, with that toss going slightly forward, but considering that Schmit received it near his kicking line, this was really more of a 19-yard run.

As of early in the third quarter, Oklahoma had added one more field goal and was up 13-6 on Iowa State. At that point, Schmit had made both of the field goals he attempted, from 41 and 34 yards respectively. Add that to his touchdown, and he’s been involved in all of the Sooners’ scoring thus far.
