Ohio State Syndication: The Columbus Dispatch

This week, the Ohio State Buckeyes made a pretty big move at the quarterback position when they decided to give backup quarterback Devin Brown some snaps in red zone situations during their game against the Purdue Boilermakers, taking out starting quarterback Kyle McCord. And Ryan Day explained that decision following the game.

Ryan Day explained that Ohio State initially started working on the special package with Devin Brown in case the weather forced them to run the ball more often, as it did last year during a game against the Northwestern Wildcats.

“It started off with the weather,” Ryan Day said. “It was rain, it was wind, and certainly didn’t want to have the same situation that happened last year and wanted to make sure that we had a good plan.”

Brown is a better, stronger, and more explosive runner than Kyle McCord, so Day and the Buckeyes decided he could help their running game.

“Devin is very explosive with his feet. He’s very strong, he’s big, he’s powerful, he’s athletic. We feel like he gives us a little bit of something there. He also throws the ball really well, but that’s something that we’ve looked at, we’ve been working on a little bit. We felt like this was the right time on the road to do that. I think it did give us something…numbers in the redzone, but we can’t turn it over on the one-yard line. In a close game, that could have been the difference.”

We’ll have to see if the Buckeyes make use of this package during this week’s game against the Penn State Nittany Lions.
