For most college football programs, an 11-2 season would be seen as a huge success. For the Ohio State Buckeyes, it’s a disappointment, especially given how close they were to defeat the Georgia Bulldogs in the College Football Playoff semifinals. Head coach Ryan Day has gotten his fair share of criticism for not being able to take the Buckeyes to the next level and now he’s making a big change to help improve the team’s ability to win when it matters most.

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit casually mentioned on Monday’s special edition of College GameDay that Day is planning to hand over calling duties to an assistant coach so that he can focus on being more of a game manager.

“Ryan Day mentioned in our production meetings that he’s going to stop calling plays next year because he needs to become more of a manager as a head coach, and when you’re prepping a game plan there’s a lot more that goes into it Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday to be ready to call those plays on Saturday,” Herbstreit said.

“So he’s been thinking about relinquishing those [duties], which would be the first time ever.”

There’s some speculation that receivers coach Brian Hartline could take on that role now that former offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson is off to be the head coach at Tulsa. Of course, Day could also bring in a new coordinator to call plays as well. We’ll see what we decide to do as the Buckeyes hope to finally make it back to the national title game next season.
