Star running back Carson Steele announced his intentions to transfer from Ball State. Ball State running back Carson Steele runs past a pair of Western Illinois defenders during their game at Scheumann Stadium Thursday, Sept. 2, 2021. Steele finished the game with 79 rushing yards and his first collegiate touchdown.

One of the top running backs in the country will play college football for a new school in the 2023 season.

Ball State running back Carson Steele announced on Saturday that he will enter the transfer portal. What makes the idea of adding Steele even more enticing for potential suitors is that he’s only a sophomore.

Steele released a statement on social media announcing his intentions to transfer, noting that “it would be best for [him] to enter the transfer portal for [his] remaining years of eligibility.”

The 6’1″, 215-pound running back was sensational for the Cardinals in 2022. His 1,556 rushing yards (5.4 AVG) ranks sixth in the nation, and he ranks fourth in carries with 289. He’s also tied for 11th in rushing touchdowns with 14. He added 29 receptions — one for a touchdown — out of the backfield as well.

Steele ran for at least 179 yards in four different games this season, including three of the last four (his top performance was for 198 yards and three touchdowns at Toledo on Nov. 8). He was recently named first-team All-MAC after leading the conference in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.

There should be no shortage of college football programs interested in adding Steele’s rushing talents ahead of the 2023 season.
