While the hype is all over Arch Manning, Steve Sarkisian stopped short of anointing him as the Texas Longhorns’ starting quarterback.
Following Texas’ spring game, which featured a lot of ballyhoo about the top-rated recruit, Texas’ head coach stamped out any suggestion that Manning will start at QB for now. Sark all but named Quinn Ewers as the Longhorns starter.
Steve Sarkisian: "I think it's pretty clear to say, Quinn is our starting quarterback."

“I think it’s pretty clear to say, Quinn [Ewers] is our starting quarterback,” Sarkisian said, via Chris Hummer on Twitter.
The decision doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. While the hype train will roll on, true freshmen starting quarterbacks are a rarity at times. Especially right away. So even with all the hype, the potential talent, and more, Arch Manning will simply have to wait his turn.
Ewers was the starter going into the 2022 season as well. He won the job in summer camp last year and it looks like he has a significant beat on it as well. In 10 games last season, Ewers threw for 2,177 yards, 15 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He completed 58.1 percent of his passes.
So Manning will have to be the understudy for the immediate future now. Being the highest-rated recruit in Texas history (according to ESPN’s recruiting services) will still come with a moratorium to hit the field at DKR for significant action.
