Over the years, the Red River Rivalry between the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners has become one of the most iconic rivalries in all of college football. And even though the game is played at a neutral site which should negate any home-field advantage for either team, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian admits that wasn’t the case in his first game against Oklahoma in 2021.

The Texas Longhorns had a sizable lead entering the fourth quarter of the 2021 contest with Oklahoma, but ultimately the Longhorns were outscored 25-7 in the game’s final quarter as the Sooners pulled out a 55-48 comeback victory. And Sarkisian revealed a pretty surprising thing that helped change the game: the crowd noise.

“They’re split at the 50-yard line,” Sarkisian said during an interview with the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast according to On3. “So, in one end of the field, it’s a home game. You get to the other end of the field, it’s a road game. I mean that. I had to learn that the first year. I mean, we were false starting. I’m like ‘what is going on?’ We were stuck on their end of the field. That ultimately spun the game in the fourth quarter there too.”

Ultimately, that wasn’t an issue this year though as the Longhorns blew out Oklahoma by a score of 49-0.
