It’s fair to say that the 2022 Texas A&M Aggies football season has been an unmitigated disaster, with some calling for head coach Jimbo Fisher to be fired. Given his contract status, that’s not going to happen right now. However, Aggies fans did get one of their wishes on Monday as the school announced Fisher had fired offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Darrell Dickey after five years with the program.

Before joining Texas A&M in 2018, Dickey was the offensive coordinator at Memphis from 2012 to 2017, where he showed a knack for explosive offenses. However, after Texas A&M’s disappointing 8-4 finish in 2021, he was demoted from his role as OC and QB coach to co-OC and TE coach. Given the disappointment that was the 2022 season, in which the Aggies went from nationally ranked in the preseason to 5-7 on the year, the writing was on the wall.

The Aggies finished the year No. 56 in scoring offense in 2021 and No. 101 in 2022, and the team missed a bowl game for the first time since 2008.

While many were clamoring for Fisher to get the axe, it looks like he’ll head into 2023 with his job on the line (if TAMU can afford the buyout). In the meantime, Dickey’s firing earned some strong reactions from the college football world. Many of them noted that Dickey appeared to be taking the fall for Fisher, who actually calls plays for the offense.
