The Texas Tech Red Raiders have struggled historically in their in-state, in-conference (for now) rivalry matchup against the Texas Longhorns.

Heading into Saturday, they hadn’t defeated Texas in a home game since 2008, when they knocked off the No.1 ranked Longhorns with the infamous Michael Crabtree touchdown.

Saturday’s game against Texas had its heroics as well, with Texas Tech kicker Trey Wolff hitting a clutch 45-yard field goal to take a three point lead with only 21 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

Texas quarterback Hudson Card would then miraculously go on to lead the Longhorns down the field to attempt a game-tying kick to send the game to overtime, which kicker Bert Austin was able to nail.

The Longhorns would then start with the ball to begin overtime, and the Red Raiders would make the biggest play of the game in the first play of overtime.

Texas Tech linebacker Krishon Merriwether made an excellent play to strip Texas running back Bijan Robinson, giving the ball back to the Red Raiders.

Needing only a field goal to win the game, Wolff would yet again get an opportunity to close out the Longhorns for good.

He would do just that by making a 20-yard field goal to upset the No.22 ranked Longhorns, which prompted the Red Raiders’ fans to storm the field.

It was an extremely close contest throughout, and many are praising Texas Tech for winning the tough battle against a bitter rival.

With Texas’s impending move to the SEC, this may be one of the last opportunities for Texas Tech to defeat their rival at home in Lubbock. So it was certainly a very meaningful win for the Red Raiders, and a disappointing loss for the Longhorns.
