James Franklin

This upcoming college football season, the Penn State Nittany Lions will be one of the top teams in college football with quite a lot of returning talent on its roster. That’s good news for the team and head coach James Franklin, but it as former Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer points out, it also put a lot of pressure on them.

During an appearance on The Hard Count with JD Pickell, Meyer revealed that he thinks there is “an enormous amount of pressure” on James Franklin and the Penn State Nittany Lions this year.

“I think it’s an enormous amount of pressure,” Meyer said according to On3. “… In ’16, they had a great year. They beat us. They have to beat the Wolverines, they have to beat the Buckeyes. I’ll tell you what, they’re loaded. They have two running backs that are elite. That quarterback that’s going to take over is tremendous. We got to do several of his games.”

Meyer acknowledged that Penn State has emerged as one of the top teams in the conference, but the Nittany Lions haven’t been able to make the College Football Playoff. And as long as they have to play Ohio State every season, it’s going to be tough.

“James Franklin has done a really good job,” Meyer said. “But he’s got to close the deal and, unfortunately, they’ve got to go to The Horseshoe this year. It’s a tough place to play.”
