Throughout his time as a college football head coach, Urban Meyer signed a lot of extremely fast players to his Florida Gators and Ohio State Buckeyes teams. But one of the final receivers he signed might have been one of the fastest he ever brought in: Jameson Williams.
During an appearance on his Urban’s Take with Tim May podcast, Urban Meyer recalled the first time he met Jameson Williams during a recruiting visit.
“I remember, I was still there when we recruited Jameson Williams,” Meyer said on the podcast according to On3. “We went into St. Louis, and I went into the high school… and the head coach marched them down here and I said hello. And as they all left, the coach looked at me and said ‘I thought you liked speed, coach?’
“I said, ‘like speed? I love speed.’
“He said ‘that kid right there ran a 10.28 or 10.31 100-meter [time].’
And I was like ‘get his [behind] back in here.’”
Obviously, Meyer liked him, and Williams ultimately signed with the Buckeyes along with Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson. All three of them were first-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft.
“And he got back and he was, I mean, tiny. But you could tell, he had a little swagger to him,” Meyer said. “You saw a lot of that stuff there. His family was outstanding, and we went after him and got him. So you’ve got Olave, you’ve got Garrett Wilson and those guys were all in the, I believe in the ’17 or ’18 recruiting class. All first-rounders, all premier players.”
Williams ultimately transferred to Alabama where he finished his college career, but it’s clear that Meyer never forgot about his speed.
