The Wisconsin Badgers made a surprise hire over the weekend when they poached head football coach Luke Fickell from the Cincinnati Bearcats. Fickell had served as the Bearcats’ head coach since 2018, when he left the Ohio State Buckeyes, his alma mater. Fickell led the Bearcats to the 2022 College Football Playoffs.

The Bearcats named assistant coach Kerry Coombs as the interim head coach of the program. Whether the university removes the interim tag from Coombs after the season remains to be seen.

However, Kyle Rowland, a college football reporter for The Toledo Blade, has one major hire in mind for the Bearcats to replace Fickell: Three-time national championship coach Urban Meyer.

“I’ve said it since 2018: Urban Meyer will follow Luke Fickell at Cincinnati. Meyer is a UC grad, the Bearcats are going to the Big 12, Meyer’s son, Nate, has been a student assistant under Fickell. It’s perfect,” Rowland tweeted.

Meyer currently serves as college football analyst for Fox Sports on the Big Noon Saturday crew. Meyer returned to the broadcasting booth after a disastrous stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars that didn’t last an entire season. Meyer has recently insinuated he has no desire to return to coaching, but that’s a song sports fans have heard before.

Only time will tell if Rowland’s prophecy comes to fruition.
