This offseason, the Ohio State Buckeyes will be searching for their next starting quarterback with former star starter C.J. Stroud heading to the NFL Draft. The quarterback battle is between Kyle McCord and Devin Brown, and as former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer explains, it won’t be easy for current head coach Ryan Day.

During an interview with On3’s J.D. PicKell on The Hard Count, Urban Meyer called Ryan Day’s upcoming quarterback decision “a very strenuous decision” due to the fact that the quarterback who does not earn the starting role will likely transfer from the program.

“I think Devin Brown and Kyle McCord, they’re different [types] of players,” Meyer said on the podcast, according to On3. “One’s more of a drop-back pocket player and one’s kind of an athlete, run around. I’ve been there. It’s going to be a very strenuous decision because what happens nowadays, when a guy loses a battle, a lot of times, they leave and go start somewhere else, which you can’t fault that player for doing that. This is a big decision.”

Meyer didn’t really face the same sort of pressure in his day, as he retired from Ohio State before the popularization of the transfer portal. It’s safe to say it’s a new era of college football.
