ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit and Georgia co-defensive coordinator Will Muschamp have a history. Back in 1993, Georgia faced Ohio State in the Citrus Bowl.
Muschamp played defensive for Georgia and Herbstreit was the Buckeye’s quarterback. Muschamp recalled a time when saw Herbstreit throw for the Buckeyes before the bowl game and, well, let’s just say he wasn’t impressed with the future ESPN and Amazon broadcaster.
Muschamp joked that when he first saw Herbstreit throw a pass at a luncheon at the 1993 Citrus Bowl that he “knew we had a shot to win.”

If you saw Herbstreit’s stats from that 1992 season, you could understand Muschamp’s confidence. Herbie threw for just under 2,000 yards (1,904) and threw more interceptions (six) than touchdowns that season (four). The Buckeyes had a pretty good ground game back in the day which included a young freshman running back named Eddie George.
Back in 1992 when George was a freshman and Herbstreit was a senior, he ran for 176 yards and five touchdowns. Eddie would later go on and win the Heisman in 1995 as a junior. They also had Robert Smith who rushed for over 100 yards in that game.
Ultimately, Muschamp was right. Behind running back Garrison Hearst, who was named MVP of the game, the Bulldogs won 21-14.
