Get ready to make like a kid again because the drink of the late 1980s is coming back to a grocery store near you. Hi-C is bringing back Ecto Cooler just in time for the brand new Ghostbusters movie. It is a corporate tie-in we can all get behind, especially those of us who had Ecto Cooler in our lunchbox in elementary school.
The news was finally made official today. According to a release from Coca-Cola, the company that produces Hi-C drinks, the new Hi-C Ecto Cooler will be sold in 10-packs of six-ounce juice boxes, and in six and 12-packs of 11.5 ounce aluminum cans. Furthermore, the cans will come with a label printed using thermal ink that turns slime green when the drink is cold. So put it in your fridge and hope that Zuul doesn’t overtake your fridge in the meantime. The drink is scheduled to hit shelves on May 30, before the release of the new Ghostbusters movie (scheduled for a July 15 release). Oh, and there is also a website for the drink, complete with a new Twitter and Facebook account.
Minus the absence of the lovable Slimer, the packaging looks pretty similar to the original packaging from back in the day. But still, it would be nice to see Slimer included on the label.
“Hi-C Ecto Cooler fueled a pop culture phenomenon that is well remembered and beloved by fans to this day,” said Charles Torrey, vice president, Minute Maid/Hi-C Brands,Coca-Cola North America. “Sony Pictures was extremely enthusiastic about bringing it back for this special occasion, and the timing of the upcoming Ghostbusters film made this the exact right time.”
Coca-Cola filed to renew the trademark to Ecto Cooler last September, which was an indication to those paying close enough attention the beverage giant was planning to revive the childhood favorite of so many. The timing made sense, of course, because we were inching closer and closer to the release of the rebooted Ghostbusters movie. Coca-Cola actually discontinued the drink in 2001, long after any Ghostbusters movies or TV shows were on air. If that doesn’t tell you just how much people loved the drink, what will?
Selling out whatever quantities of this revived drink as quickly as possible. That’s what.
