Cleanup after a watermelon truck crashed.

All sorts of unusual things can cause traffic delays, but a highway ramp covered in watermelons is pretty new. That’s what happened around Huntersville, North Carolina Tuesday, though, where a tractor-trailer hauling watermelons crashed on a highway interchange ramp, spilling hundreds of watermelons everywhere and closing the ramp for almost six hours. Here are photos from the scene:

The crash took place around noon, and the scene wasn’t cleared until around 6 p.m., so this wound up being quite the delay. Here’s video of an excavator clearing watermelons off the highway:

And more details from UPI:

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said the driver of the truck was going too fast for the curve on Interstate 485’s inner ramp to northbound I-77 in North Charlotte.

The vehicle overturned, blocking the entire ramp and spilling hundreds of watermelons into the roadway. Cleanup crews were on the scene for several hours to clean up the smashed fruit and upright the tipped truck.

The crash occurred just before noon Tuesday. Officials said the ramp was cleared by 6 p.m.

Now that’s quite the messy situation. And won’t someone think of all the wasted watermelon? That’s a whole summer’s worth of picnics there!
