The Ringer founder Bill Simmons, one of FanDuel’s biggest promoters, has built a long, lucrative relationship with the gambling site and has constantly revolved his content around it. However, he recently outed himself for proxy betting via The Bill Simmons podcast on Monday when he discussed bets placed on AFC win-total over/unders. Following his statements.
Simmons admitted to providing his daughter’s boyfriend with his personal login credentials, which the boyfriend used to place several season-long over bets on the FanDuel app while in Boston, and is now under investigation by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.
“My daughter’s boyfriend, Hank, who’s a great kid, turned 21 this summer, as did my daughter. And there was a couple bets that I really wanted to get in, the UCLA overs, but Houston, the market had not shifted appropriately yet. I can’t have my daughter do it, my dad would have no idea how to do it. But Hank, I trust Hank,” Simmons said.
“I let Hank log into my FanDuel as me, [sent] the code to make sure it’s me to my phone, I give him the code, he logs in. And I have all this money that I had from last year because I actually hit a bunch of futures last year.
“And he’s putting in bets for me, and honestly it’s the closest I’ve ever felt to Hank. Real bonding moment for us. A week later, I called him up, ran it back. We did some more.”
FanDuel’s rules and regulations state that a user’s account may be suspended and all winnings forfeited if the user is found to have engaged in proxy betting. As for Simmons and his “accomplice,” they’re awaiting the final verdict, although a permanent ban from FanDuel for Simmons is highly unlikely.
