NATIONAL HARBOR, MD – MAY 31: Edith Fuller of Tulsa, Oklahoma, who is the youngest speller this year, spells her word during round two of 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee at Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center May 31, 2017 in National Harbor, Maryland. The Scripps National Spelling Bee will be without its Cinderella story this year, as six-year-old Edith Fuller will not appear in the finals.

Despite spelling two words correctly on stage, Fuller did not score high enough on a written test to make the finals.

From ABC Buffalo:

Six-year-old Edith Fuller spelled “nyctinasty” correctly on stage Wednesday.

She spelled “tapas” correctly, too.

However, the Oklahoma kindergarten student did not score high enough on the written test Wednesday to qualify her for the final round.

A kindergarten student from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Fuller was five when she qualified for the National Spelling Bee, making her the youngest participant ever. There is no age minimum for the spelling bee, and Fuller still has nine more tries to win it all before she’s over the age limit of 15.

Fuller can also rest easy knowing that she’s a better speller than almost anyone in her state. Her fellow Oklahomans still struggle to spell “patient.”
