Bubba Watson during the continuation of the second round of the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club on June 18, 2016 in Oakmont, Pennsylvania.

Many golfers, and athletes in general, have backed out of the Olympics due to Zika concerns, but this has not phased Bubba Watson.

Watson is excited at the chance to represent the United States in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, and he plans to participate if he qualifies, as he told the Chicago Tribune:

“For me, if I get in, it’s a no-brainer.”

That’s a pretty simple answer for the 37-year old Bagdad, Florida native and University of Georgia alum, who finished his final round at the U.S. Open on Sunday shooting 75 and finishing 12 over.

Watson also addressed the threat of the Zika virus, mentioning it doesn’t necessarily affect him:

“You have to remember, situations are different,” Watson said. “Both of my kids are adopted; we can’t have kids. Obviously you don’t want to get a virus, but in that way, we’re not worried at all. I’ve taken shots, done all I need to do to prepare.”

The Tribune also reported that Watson would like to see a team event in the Olympics for golf, so he wouldn’t have to compete against fellow countrymen. It would be a pretty neat thing to see him teamed up with Jordan Spieth and others in an Olympic event as opposed to competing against them in a free for all.

But, it’s cool to see Watson so excited to represent his country in the Olympics. Surely he will represent us well if he’s selected.
