The 2023 American Express is currently underway, and the star of the event thus far has been rookie golfer Davis Thompson. Thompson’s score of -18 through two rounds was good enough for the 36-hole lead. On his way to achieving that, he tied an unreal PGA Tour record.

Thompson made five eagles through two rounds of golf. That ties the most eagles recorded at a 72-hole event in PGA Tour history.

This event is an unusual one compared to others on tour. The American Express is played throughout three different courses which present different difficulties for the golfers in the field. Thompson made two eagles in his first round at the La Quinta course, and three eagles at the Nicklaus Stadium Course in round 2.

Jon Rahm, who is trailing Thompson in second place at -16 discussed Thompson’s historic start to this tournament, giving him props for tying this incredible record.

“Five eagles through two rounds on two different courses is pretty impressive,” Rahm said of Thompson’s play via Golfweek.

Thompson has two more rounds to play. So it’s certainly plausible that he can get one more eagle to break the record.

This record is also a great sign of how he may finish in this event. Of the players who have gotten five eagles in a tournament, all of them have finished inside the top 10 at that event.

If Thompson’s impressive play continues, it would be the best performance of his young career. The rookie golfer has not yet won on the PGA Tour. This weekend is undoubtedly his best chance to do so with such a hot start.
