Leave it to Donald Trump to use Rory McIlroy’s loss in the US Open Sunday to his advantage. McIlroy had an opportunity to win on Sunday but blew it down the stretch which cost him another major.
This is the second time this year, that arguably the world’s second-best golfer, blew an an opportunity to for win at a major.
Trump who is a big supporter of LIV Golf and has had tournaments played at his golf course, praised LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau for his victory Sunday.
“Congratulations to Bryson DeChambeau on his incredible WIN of the United States Open! He showed a toughness and inner strength, matched perfectly with his GREAT Golfing Talent, that can never be denied! Under massive pressure, he pulled off some of the greatest shots ever made, especially his spectacular sand save on the 18th Hole that gave him the Victory,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
‘”Mr. 58″ has always been a WINNER, and will go on to many more Major Championships. He is a truly tough competitor, even a nasty one, but he also happens to be a great guy. The U.S.A. could not be better represented. Congratulations also to LIV Golf for their genius in signing Bryson and other of the best Golfers in the World. Hopefully, Golf will soon come together as one, fully united, which is the way it should be!”
DeChambeau seemed more humbled than Trump after his victory Sunday.
“For him to miss that putt (on 18), I would never wish that on anybody,’ DeChambeau said after a final round of 71 left him six under par, a shot ahead of McIlroy and two clear of Patrick Cantlay and Tony Finau.”I think that fire in him is only going to continue to grow. He’s going to win more major championships.”
‘I have nothing but respect for how he plays the game of golf because, to be honest, when he was climbing up the leaderboard, he was two ahead, I was like, Uh-oh, uh-oh. But luckily things went my way,” he concluded.
You have to feel bad for a guy like McIlroy who is considered one of the best golfers in the world to be going through this yet again but he has gone through a lot these past 12 months and it seems he is just on the verge of putting it all together and then this happens.
The great Jack Nicklaus said just before the Memorial last week that he thought that McIlroy’s mental game seemed to be off and that was on display Sunday when he missed an easy put.
Maybe the pressure to hold the banner of the PGA is getting to him especially with Woods fading as the face of the PGA, he along with Tiger, have been very outspoken about their stance against LIV Golf.
While McIlroy has taken a step back from the controversy between the two tours, he is still the face for many of the anti LIV supporters, and people who support LIV Golf like Donald Trump, are thrilled by McIlroy’s humiliating loss.
