Former president Donald Trump hailed Brexit during his 2016 presidential campaign. He might not have done that if he knew how much it would cost his golf courses based in the United Kingdom.
Turnberry, in South Ayrshire, lost more than £3.7m million, according to the BBC.
Eric Trump, son of the former president, blamed Brexit for the course’s financial situation.
“Brexit has impacted our business as supply chains have been impacted by availability of drivers and staff, reducing deliveries and the availability of certain product lines,” the younger Trump wrote.
Eric Trump also blamed the “challenge” of proper staffing. He also added that the “staffing pool” has caused a “lack of access to European staff for businesses in general, resulting in greater demand.”
The BBC notes that Trump bought Turnberry golf resort from a Dubai-based company in 2014 before handing over control to his sons before his presidency while he maintained a financial interest in the project.
“If you don’t get the deal you want, if you don’t get a fair deal, then you walk away,” Trump told The Times of London in 2019 as president.
Trump also spoke positively of former British prime minister Boris Johnson, who ushered the deal into existence.
“I actually have studied it very hard. I know the different players. But I think Boris would do a very good job. I think he would be excellent. I like him. I have always liked him,” Trump told The Sun.
Trump has yet to officially comment on the financial situation.
