Grayson Murray’s parents revealed Sunday that their son committed suicide, and thanked the golf community and fans for their show of love for him.

Murray, 30, died Saturday morning, after competing in the first two rounds of the Charles Schwab Challenge in Texas. Many golfers struggled to contain their emotions after hearing the news and his death brought an outpouring of tributes from fans and the golf community.

Murray, a two-time winner on the tour, including earlier this year in the Sony Open, had publicly struggled with alcohol issues and depression. His parents, Eric and Terry Murray, issued a statement Sunday through the PGA Tour revealing he had taken his own life.

“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact our son is gone,” the statement began. “It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare.”

“We have so many questions that have no answers. But one.

“Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes. By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and — it seems — by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and will be missed.”

“Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now.”

The PGA Tour’s post on X concluded with a message: “If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, please call the national suicide and crisis lifeline in the United States at 988 or visit their website at http://988lifeline.org.”
