Rory McIlroy LIV June 4, 2023: Dublin, Ohio, USA; Rory McIIroy watches his tee shot on the first hole during the final round of the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

After losing the U.S. Open Sunday because of a missed three-foot put, Rory McIlroy has decided he will not participate in the Travelers Championship.

The last few days have been a struggle for the five-time majors champ who was on the verge of winning his sixth major and breaking his majors drought on Sunday. He hasn’t won a major in a decade since winning the PGA Championship back in 2014.

McIlroy talked about his heart-breaking loss Monday on Instagram:

“Yesterday was a tough day, probably the toughest l’ve had in my nearly 17 years as a professional golfer,” McIlory wrote Monday on Instragram, adding his congratulations to winner Bryson DeChambeau. “… As I reflect on my week, l’ll rue a few things over the course of the tournament, mostly the 2 missed putts on 16 and 18 on the final day. But, as I always try to do, l’ll look at the positives of the week that far outweigh the negatives. … I’m going to take a few weeks away from the game to process everything and build myself back up for my defense of the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open at Royal Troon. See you in Scotland.”

It will be interesting to see how he will bounce back from this loss when he returns. This was the second time this year that McIlroy has finished second at a major but this has to be one of the most devasting losses in his career.
