Things are heated at the Ryder Cup right now, and Rory McIlroy is not afraid to be in the fireworks.
While fans are traditionally polite towards golfers of all kinds at tournaments, things change for the biannual competition between the USA and Europe. The road team always has to overcome the jeers and taunts of the crowd. However, he grand slam champion had the last laugh during Saturday morning’s foursomes action.
McIlroy and his partner, Tommy Fleetwood, were attempting to secure their second victory over their American opponents, Harris English and Collin Morikawa, in two days. While lining up his approach shot on the 16th hole, McIlroy stepped away to deliver a simple message to some fans making noise around the hole:
“Shut the f— up,” McIlroy told them, according to Awful Announcing.
After all the commotion, he then had an impressive approach shot, putting the icing on the cake in a 3&2 match victory.
Fans reacted to the exchange on social media.
“Good! Cause they’re F’ing annoying!” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“And then he did! Sticking it to 4 feet to win the match!” someone else added.
It’ll be interesting to see if the American golfers end up making McIlroy regret his words.
