Heading into the final round of the U.S. Open, Scottie Scheffler was two-under and trailed 54-hole co-leaders Will Zalatoris and Matt Fitzpatrick by two shots. But before Zalatoris and Fitzpatrick began their final rounds, that changed.

Scheffler got off to a torrid start at Brookline. His opening drive found the fairway but ended in a divot. It didn’t matter. He overcame that dose of bad luck and found the green. Scheffler then made his short birdie putt to get to within one.

Scheffler was back at it on the next hole. His tee shot on the par three found the fringe, just off of the green. Scheffler elected to putt and found the bottom of the hole for his second straight birdie to start the round.

Scheffler’s red-hot start caught the attention of those following the U.S. Open’s final round.

Scheffler is the No. 1 ranked golfer in the world and also the hottest, having won four times since February. When he gets going, he’s hard to beat. As we saw at Augusta in April, he can close at the majors, as well.

A birdie-birdie start does not mean that Scheffler will win the U.S. Open, of course. But knowing what he’s capable of, his hot start was likely not what the other contenders wanted to see.
